China issues two student visa categories and the difference is structural. The X1 is for study longer than one hundred and eighty days and requires you to convert to a residence permit shortly after arrival. The X2 is for shorter study and does not. Applying for the wrong one, or misreading which your programme requires, creates a status problem that is tedious to unwind.
The application is made at the Chinese representation after your institution issues an admission notice and the corresponding official application form for study, which the university obtains for you.
The document chain
You will need the admission notice, the official study application form issued through your university, a completed physical examination record, passport, and photographs. Where your programme exceeds six months the physical examination has specific validity and format requirements that a general medical certificate will not satisfy.
Pakistani academic documents will require attestation. As always, this runs in sequence through HEC, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the mission, and as always it is the step most often begun too late.
Scholarships
China operates substantial government and provincial scholarship schemes open to Pakistani students, and several are genuinely comprehensive. They run on fixed annual cycles and are frequently administered through partner institutions or the education ministry channel rather than by direct application only.
Because the routes are plural and the deadlines differ, a scholarship search for China is a mapping exercise rather than a single form. It rewards starting early and being systematic.
After arrival
If you hold an X1 you must register with the local authority and apply for the residence permit within the specified window. Universities usually assist with this, but the responsibility is yours and the deadline is short.
Language of instruction varies. English-taught programmes are numerous, particularly at postgraduate level, but the day-to-day environment will still require some Chinese. Institutions that include language tuition in the first year are worth prioritising.
