Effective faculty contact demonstrates that you have read specific work, understood its direction, and have something relevant to contribute. It is short, specific, and sent months before the deadline.
Mass-emailed generic enquiries are worse than no contact at all — they are visibly generic, and they mark you as an applicant who did not do the reading.
Build the timeline backwards
The US cycle spans more than a year: standardised testing, outreach, applications, funding decisions, I-20 issuance, and the visa interview. Every stage gates the next.
